When locals say they are going to 'town' they are referring to Kahului. Kahului is home to Maui's main airport, the deep-draft harbor where most of our goods come in from the Mainland, light industrial areas, Costco, Target and the majority of our commercial shopping centers. Kahului is not generally considered a tourist destination, but it does feature some fantastic attractions - the Alexander & Baldwin Sugar Museum, Kanaha Pond State Wildlife Sanctuary, Kanaha Beach County Park, and the Maui Arts and Cultural Center.
Kahului has a hot semi-arid climate zone due to its location on the leeward side of Maui, relative to the trade winds. And has an average annual rainfall of 18 inches. Much of Maui's newer development is taking place in Kahului's Maui Lani Subdivision.
