Nestled at the foot of the West Maui Mountains, and just 10 minutes west from the Kahului Airport is Wailuku, the commercial center and county seat of Maui’s government. Explore the charming storefronts around Market Street, showcasing dozens of family businesses, many of which have been in continuous operation for generations. These off-the-beaten-path “Mom and Pops” are home to local favorite shops, restaurants and bakeries.
Recently developed by the Wailuku Main Street Association, the “Rediscover Wailuku” walking tour highlights more than 23 of the town’s fascinating historical and cultural attractions, including Kaahumanu Church, the Bailey House, Pihana Kalani Heiau and the Iao Theater, built in 1927.
Wailuku is also the gateway to lush Iao Valley, home to the iconic Iao Needle the site of the 1790 Battle of Kepaniwai where King Kamehameha clashed with Maui's army in his quest to unite the islands.
One of our favorite attractions in Wailuku is the Maui Tropical Planation where the private grounds showcase a variety of native Hawaiian plants and tropical fruits. We often stop by The Millhouse Roasting Company for a 100% Maui Grown coffee experience before we make our way to the Kumu Farms Farmer's Market Stand for an amazing local produce selection. Though I must admit The Millhouse Restaurant is one of my favorite places to eat or grab a Pau Hana with friends - Their bartenders have some serious craft cocktail making skills!
